Business – Dresden

Often referred to as “Silicon Saxony”, this fastest-growing region in the former East Germany is Europe’s leading location for the development of memory chips and a major centre of hi-tech industry. The dynamic economy of the region is due in part to its excellent geographical situation, its key location in Central Europe, its well developed transport connections and its role as a bridge to the countries of Eastern Europe.

With eight universities five Leibniz Institutes, three Max-Planck Institutes and eleven Fraunhofer Institutes, Dresden has a high density of research facilities. The intensive co-operation between commerce and science provide many points of contact for conferences and congresses. With the Research Center for Regenerative Therapies, Dresden became the first location in the former East Germany to acquire a “cluster of excellence”. In addition to these top-flight achievements, the Kinderuni (Children’s University), the Long Night of Sciences and the Academy for Senior Citizens stimulate and cater for a broad public interest in scientific research and lifelong education.
