Suggested Excursions – Hannover

Marienburg is the family seat of the Guelph dynasty. The current head of the family, Prince Ernst August of Hannover, has opened up parts of his castle to visitors. The Pied Piper town of Hamelin, the medieval town of Celle, the Lüneburg Heath, the Harz mountains and the "Volkswagen Autostadt" automotive exhibition complex in Wolfsburg with its displays and attractions are ideal excursions from Hannover.

Marienburg Castle

Marienburg Castle is located 20 km south of Hannover. It was originally the gift of George V, King of Hannover, to his wife, Queen Mary. The erstwhile Guelph summer residence remains in family possession today. Guided tours of the rooms (approx. 60 minutes) are available daily from Easter through to the end of October.

Hamelin

Hamelin is known for the story of the Pied Piper. It became wealthy as a result of its favourable location as a trading centre on the River Weser. This wealth was reflected in its lavishly decorated houses, and the town became a jewel of the Weser Renaissance style.

Medieval town of Celle

The enchanting medieval town of Celle with its well-preserved centre of more than 500 half-timbered houses and the 13th century ducal palace is located about 50 km north of Hannover. Celle combines vibrant modern-day life with the tradition of a medieval town.
