Events – Leipzig

Traditional-style cultural events take place at venues such as the Gewandhaus concert hall, the opera house and St Thomas' Church. Large-scale events are also held at other historical venues such as the Moritzbastei club, the Battle of Leipzig monument and the park stage.

Leipzig - Festival of Lights

On 9 October 1989 about 70,000 people congregated in the streets of Leipzig. The demonstrators called out “Wir sind das Volk” (“We are the People”) and “Keine Gewalt” (“No violence”). The Monday demonstrations remained peaceful and set the course for fundamental change in Europe: The Berlin wall fell only one month later.

Leipzig Bach Festival

J. S. Bach spent 27 years in Leipzig – from 1723 until his death. Here he wrote his best and most famous works. Every year the “Leipzig Bach Festival” invites renowned artists from all over the world to perform at authentic sites in and around Leipzig.

Leipzig Christmas Market

The tradition of the Leipzig Christmas market dates back to 1458. With about 250 twinkling stalls embedded harmoniously in Leipzig’s historical city centre it is one of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany.
