Lifestyle – Leipzig

Shopping in the Mädler passage

Architecture

Leipzig's most striking feature in the historical city center are the many arcades and passage ways, remains of a long trade fair history. Building styles include Renaissance and Baroque as well as Art Noveau or modern architecture. Among the most famous arcades are Specks Hof and the elegant Mädler Passage. Exclusive boutiques can be found here as well as the world-famous Auerbachs Keller restaurant. The city boasts a wealth of late 19th / early 20th century architecture and Europe's largest district built-up in the style of historicism.

Shopping

As can be expected from a city of trading, shopping is a major issue here. The compact historical city center is full of shops, boutiques, department stores, etc. Even Leipzig's impressive Central Station (Europe's largest railway terminus!) houses a shopping mall. About 140 different shops can be found here, with opening hours until 10 o'clock at night. Food markets offer fresh farm produce from the area twice weekly. And every year in September/October the Leipzig Market Days, a kind of fall festival, attract thousands of visitors.

Dining and Nightlife

Leipzig's nightlife and dining possibilities have become more than an insider tip. There are around 1,500 pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants in town, about 500 in the city center alone. Famous districts include Drallewatsch in the city center, the area around Gottschedstraße near Central Theater and the places along Karl-Liebknecht-Straße south of the city center. In the summer people love to sit outside in street cafés and restaurants. You can enjoy international cuisine, wines and beers but also traditional Saxon hospitality, food and drinks in places such as famous Auerbachs Keller, Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum or others. By the way, Leipzig has its own beer speciality - the Gose. The top-fermented beer tastes best in the warm season. It is served pure or with fruit syrups or liqueures.
