Suggested Excursions – Leipzig

Dessau Bauhaus, copyright LTM

Dessau Bauhaus

Leipzig is an ideal base for excursions, for example to the Bauhaus town of Dessau and nearby Wörlitz Park (a UNESCO world heritage site), to sites of historical and scenic interest in the Saale valley or to Luther City Wittenberg.

Dessau and Wörlitzer Park - From Bauhaus to Landscape Architecture

Dessau became a Meca for artists and architects of the Classic Modernism as Bauhaus artists came to the city in 1925 and Walter Gropius established the Bauhaus School here. With the Bauhaus, the Dessau Arbeitsamt (job centre) and the "Master's Houses", the artists turned their visions of industrial-era architectural art into reality. A few kilometres away near the small town Wörlitz, visit the world famous landscape park. Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau built an artistic landscape on the outskirts of the Elbe River meadows which are unrivalled in Europe.

Meissen - City of "White Gold"

Meissen, a city with a history dating back more than 1,000 years, is also called the "cradle" of Saxony and is embedded in the magical landscape of the Elbe River Valley, surrounded by vineyards. You will get to know the medieval city centre with the Albrechtsburg Catle and the cathedral during a sightseeing walk. Meissen is also the domicile of the first European porcelain factory, whose exhibition hall and exhibition workshop will be visited.

Luther City Wittenberg - in the Footsteps of the Reformation

Nearly everything in Wittenberg evokes Martin Luther: the Schlosskirche (castle church) with its bronze doors inscribed with Luther's 95 theses and home to the tumbs of both Luther and Melanchton; the Stadtkirche (city church) which houses the Cranach Altar, the Lutherhalle (Luther Hall), the Melanchton House and the Elector Residence... Twenty years was all it took to ensure Wittenberg's place in history. The great era started with Luther's posting of his theses in 1517 and ended with his burial in the Schlosskirche in 1546. Succumb to the charms of the town known as the "Mother of Reformation" and track the movement which changed the world from here.
