Bordered by Türkenstrasse and Luisenstrasse, Munich's art quarter boasts a total of seven museums, between them covering all aspects of painting, from the Old Masters to contemporary art. Also worthy of attention are sculptures, statues and works of art from antiquity to the present day. Guided tours of the temporary exhibitions are available on request. Closed on Mondays, except the New Pinakothek (closed on Tuesdays).

Masterpieces from every artistic period

Looking at a work of art should always be a sensuous experience, and that's certainly what you get in the Munich Art Quarter. The three Pinakothek galleries (Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne), together with the Glyptothek museum of Greek and Roman sculptures, the Collection of Antiquities, Lenbach House and the Schack Gallery, form a unique art complex covering works ranging from ancient times and through the late Middle Ages to the present day. Scheduled to open in autumn 2008, the Brandhorst Museum will showcase the extensive collection of Udo and Annette Brandhorst. In addition to the large museums, twelve galleries have opened their doors here over the years, making this a true paradise for art lovers.

You could take a journey through the history of art at the Munich Art Quarter in just one day, but then you would have to restrict your visit to a few exemplary works. The Glyptothek museum features ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. The 'Alte Pinakothek' has a collection of European masterpieces dating from the 14th to 18th centuries, while the 'Neue Pinakothek' provides an overview of 19th century European Art. The 'Pinakothek der Moderne', one of the largest museum buildings in Europe, houses four important collections of art, graphic art, architecture and design from the 20th and 21st centuries. The Lenbach House has an extensive collection ranging from the Gothic period through to contemporary art. Scheduled to open in autumn 2008, the Brandhorst Museum will present works by classical modernists and artists from the second half of the 20th century.
