BERLIN – OPEN AROUND THE CLOCK
Berlin - Open Around The Clock
The Berlin Bear, Berlin's mascot, dances to the fast beat of the cultural metropolis. The old and the new of the capital are experiencing a second „Gründerzeit“, a building boom. East and West are growing together. Cosmopolitan Berlin offers superlative experiences. Here, opposites attract. Albert Einstein and Bertolt Brecht lived here. Whosoever sets foot in this city will understand why this is so. A world metropolis is ready to be discovered by you:

• 3 opera houses
• More than 150 theaters and stages, from the off-theater to the Wintergarten, to the Schaubühne
• More than 170 museums - from the Egyptian Museum with the bust of Nefertiti to Hamburger Bahnhof, a museum replete with contemporary art
• More than 300 private galleries present
the finest works of art
• 7,000 pubs and restaurants
• The Kurfürstendamm, the great boulevard with 3.5 km of great shopping opportunities If these attractions are not reason enough to breathe the proverbial Berliner Luft, the air of Berlin, you can experience the green capital with its palaces and parks between forests, rivers and canals. Berlin is the focal point of politics, entertainment and cultural life in Germany.

Berlin – new every hour.

Berlin - Art & Culture
Historic Buildings
The Brandenburg Gate is Berlin’s only remaining city gate. It was built from 1788 to 1791 by C. G. Langhans. The Quadriga, which crowns the gate, was constructed by G. Schadow in 1794. The Reichstag has been the seat of Parliament since 1998 (it was built by Wallot between 1884 and 1894). Visitors can see the plenary chamber from the glass dome (23.5 m high, 40 m wide, built by N. S. Foster).

Art
The „Liebermann Villa“ Max Liebermann's summer house and garden is an exhibition venue and a wonderful place to linger. Built in 1910, the garden was shaped by Liebermann's own ideas and inspired him in more than 200 paintings.

Music
The Berlin Philharmonic has been one of the world’s best orchestras for decades. The orchestra was founded in 1882. Since October 1963 the orchestra has been housed in the Philharmonic (designed by Hans Scharoun in 1963) at the Kulturforum. Chief conductor is Sir Simon Rattle.

Theater
Grand revues, its own ballet ensemble (80 dancers) and orchestra, variety performance as well as a great chorus make a visit to Europe’s largest revue theater, the Friedrichstadtpalast, an unforgettable experience.

Museums
Berlin has more than 170 museums. The new Gemäldegalerie (Painting Gallery) at the Kulturforum in the Tiergarten is only one of the highlights of Berlin’s cultural landscape. The gallery houses one of the most important collections of paintings from the 13th to the 18th century.

Berlin - Lifestyle & Entertainment
In Berlin, inspiration is fuelled by the unfinished, the constant changes and readiness to embrace the new. Berlin Design - from architecture to fashion - sparks in international interest with exhibitions, trade shows and many events. The creative potential capacity of the city has moved UNESCO to accept Berlin as the first German city in the global network of the creative cities Creative Cities Network.

The Hackeschen Höfe and the bordering streets are locations where fashion and design are a bit shriller and more offbeat than elsewhere in Berlin. Galleries, bars and cafes make this area an incrowd meeting place. Nobody should miss a Berlin night under the art 2nouveau building facades or in the Variete Chamaelion.

The constant changes feature Berlin's night life. With new party ideas and innovative club concepts there's always something to experience in Berlin's club scene. In about 150 discos, clubs and bars of different styles the party goes on until the morning.

Berlin - Shopping
The Kurfürstendamm and Tauentzienstrasse with their department stores and boutiques are among the most beautiful promenades of Berlin. The legendary Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) is the uncontested highlight. It is the largest department store on the European continent. Here you can shop to your hearts content. A visit to the Food Section, featuring specialties from around the globe, should not be missed.

Friedrichstrasse is fast becoming a top destination due to its extraordinary architecture. Galerie Lafayette with its French flair, and Quartier 206 with its boutiques and designer stores, are a rewarding experience.

In Berlin's numerous shops one can find trendy collections of young designers, extravagant shoe creations and stylish accessories. Especially Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg and Oranienburgerstraße in Mitte are the locations to rummage for quarrying fantastic and exceptional fashion products.

Berlin - Culinary
Potato soup à la Kaiser Wilhelm is a Berlin specialty. This hearty soup contains more than potatoes, but spices, parsely and carrots lend it its special flavor. And finally, cured meat and sausages are heated in the pureed soup.

The Berliners’ typical meat dish is Eisbein mit Erbspuree (pork knuckles with pureed peas). It was first served around one hundred years ago in a small distillery at Görlitzer Bahnhof. Today, the meat is served boiled, fried, baked or cured.
